We were watching previews and saw one for a movie that looked like it was done in the same style as the Paranoia Agent anime series. We looked it up, and it was! Director and Writer Satoshi Kon. The other stuff on his IMDB list looked good too, so we got Millennium Actress.
I really liked the way it was done, how when she retold her life, it was a movie being filmed. I kind of knew what was going to happen in the end, and though I thought it was cheesy, it was the right way to end it.
I liked the movie, but not the way it was put together. I didn't think the stories had anything to do with each other other than the guy who sold the other guy the gun (and the underlying stuff about family and parents' neglecting to pay attention to their children), so I don't understand why they had to alternate.
I think it would have been better if the first half was one story/country, and the second half was of the other (like in Full Metal Jacket).
That, or have it alternate more frequently. It stayed on one for so long that I'd be so focused on it, and felt like someone switched the channel on me when it skipped over to the other one. It was also hard to remember exactly what had happened since the other story when it switched back, since it'd been so long. Maybe it's just me and my short attention span, but meh.
I really, really loved The Illusionist, but I think The Prestige is even cooler. I watched it all the way through again after finishing it the first time, and I could probably go a third time and still enjoy it thoroughly.
I loved all the tricks, the secrets, the twists and turns. It's by the same guys who did Memento; no wonder the back and forth and time sequencing is so well placed.
Another one of those classics I haven't seen till now.
I think the first time I heard of the movie was from the catchy Deep Blue Something song. I knew the movie had something to do with Tiffany's, but other than that, didn't know the story till I saw it. And I loved it and Audrey.
Oh, and. I'm glad I'm not a smoker. Based on what I've observed of smokers, the whole movie would have had me craving cigs.
I've seen the end of Planet of the Apes 3 before, while movie hopping, but never thought I'd like one. Mostly because I didn't know what the movies were about.
I caught the first Planet of the Apes on TV though (the 1986 one), and thought it was pretty good. I like the idea o the upside-down society because humans got too greedy and killed off everyone and everything, so life started over with apes as the intelligent form and humans as the animals.
If that really does happen, wouldn't it be a kick if the apes found the Planet of the Apes movies?
Sooooo good.
We saw the trailer for this a long time ago, when we first saw trailers for the Science of Sleep. July? August? I don't remember hearing about it when it was in the theaters, but I figured the DVD would be out by now. It just came out the week I remembered it too – what timing!
Somehow, I retained all the details from the trailer, and figured out all the main parts of the movie from it. I still really liked it though – the story, the characters, their lines, the cinematography. Beautifully done. Fucked up, but beautiful.
The trailer was funny, and gave me the impression that it would be a comedy. There were funny lines and funny parts, but it was definitely not a comedy. It made me think of Little Miss Sunshine. Those of you who recommended Little Miss Sunshine to me would probably like Running With Scissors. There's no cute little girl, but it'll make you glad that your fucked up family is more normal than you thought. My heart cried out even more after hearing that it's based on a real story. I wonder how much of it is true, and how much is exaggerated. Every time I thought "wow, that's fucked up." It got even more so.
