Based on previous experience purchasing Apple products, this will become a reality right after I purchase a Modbook.
When moving in here, I didn't even think to set up a phone line. Why
would we need a phone line? We both have cellphones, and internet.
That's enough bills right there without adding another one, especially
since there's now the option of VoIP.
VoIP is definitely cheaper than what the local phone company charges, especially for international calls. And especially since there are free VoIP options too, like Skype and Gizmo. I need to set my mom up with VoIP, so she can spend more time talking to family in China without worrying about the costs. Convincing her will be easy. Explaining it to her will be the hard part. This VoIP FAQ explains it well, and I understand it... I just don't know how to translate it to my mom. But I can already picture the look on her face when I tell her she can make long distance and international calls over the computer, using a microphone (or a VoIP phone or using an adapter).
How many of you use VoIP, and if you're still using a regular landline, would you consider switching? (Vox needs a poll feature.) If you don't know what VoIP is, check the FAQ I linked above.
We still haven't gotten a router yet. Switching the ethernet cable between computers requires restarting both the modem and the computer, and sometimes having to call Comcast to reset the IP. It's more trouble than it's worth.
So when I'm just browsing through my usual websites and not doing anything that requires superfast speeds, this is what I use:
I think it's weird that they knew how to rename their wireless, but couldn't figure out how to set a password or bind it to certain mac addresses.
